Sense of place: The importance of observation
A designer's role is to solve problems with effective visual communication. Those problems can range from personal goals to community events, and from corporate functions to world changing projects- all through creative, visual communication means.
The importance of observation
Being observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to pay attention to the details and to be analytical about them.
Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings and so on.
Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting. Our senses are also important for us to know, feel, understand, analyse and even plan what we want to do. It is important to observe as it helps to find solutions to a designer's problems.

INSTRUCTIONS
Week 10:
We were tasked to express a location of our choice. The place becomes the subject of the composition in which the design principles are applied to capture the social and environmental aspects, and even the time/s effects that will best express our intention/interpretation for a particular location. This requires us to move beyond the classroom to the outer world and to employ our skills in capturing and communicating a complex relationship.

Observations (Photographs)
Based on my own photographs that I took back in Mauritius (place where I was born), I picked some pictures in my camera which made me reminisced of some special moments in my life where I felt serene and felt like at I was at peace even if it was for a short moment. I specifically chose those pictures as they were the one that came into my mind instantly and I did not need to think too much about it.

| Figure 2.4 Sketches, 2nd June 2022 |
Since I chose some places which reminded me of moments in my life where I felt at peace, I decided to use a dove as the latter is known to be a symbolism of peace.
Sketch 1 - In this sketch, I wanted to represent a dove trying to break free. Behind the dove, would be a dark background which could represent my everyday routine where I feel constantly stressed out and tired. On the upper part of my sketch, I tried to illustrate something like a tornado of clouds where I thought of using pastel colours just like the sunsets photographs that I chose. This would be a symbolism for when I think of those specific places or moment in my head, I almost feel better and for a short moment forget about my worries.
Sketch 2 - In this sketch, I drew a dove in the middle of a landscape from one of my photographs. I also drew some flowy lines almost like a mist around the dove so as to represent the fleeting memories or feelings that I felt during that time.
Sketch 3 - This sketch has the same concept as sketch 2 except that I drew another composition for it. I also think that this represents freedom just like my sketch 1.
Sketch 4 - This composition consists of a dove flying and the background would be a painting of one of my landscape. I was thinking of maybe doing it using complementary colours or monochrome colours. This sketch was a random one without any big meaning or message behind it.

After Mrs. Jinchi feedback, I cropped my picture so that it would be more coherent with my artwork.

Final Project 2: Sense of place
| Figure 2.7 Final Project 2: Sense of place called 'My haven', 8th June 2022 |
My artwork for project 2 is called 'My haven'. I chose this name as when I think of this place, the only thing that I can recall of is this feeling of tranquility that I felt. I also remember feeling stressed out at that period of time. Hence, I wanted to show throughout this artwork what I felt and what were my feelings at that time. I chose a dove due to its symbolism of peace but as I also wanted to illustrate a bird so as to represent this feeling of freedom that I also experienced. I used the same colour as in my photograph with the exception that I increased the saturation as I thought that by increasing the latter, it would give to my work a cozier and warmer feeling. Moreover, I painted some coloured stripes in the background which symbolise a gust of wind blowing onto the dove as it is setting itself free, which I think makes my work more dynamic. Additionally, I painted some thick strokes so as to create more texture into my work. On the overall, I'm pretty much satisfied of the outcome and how I expressed what I wanted to. I like the end result of the dove since it was my first time trying to paint an animal in a realistic way.

FEEDBACKS
Week 10:
I was told to go with my sketch 3 as this was the one that looked most promising. I also need to be careful of my colour palette so that it keeps this feeling of calmness and serenity that I was thinking of. Additionally, I need to crop my figure 1.9 so that it matches with the portrait view that I did. I was also told that the sun around my dove almost looks like a halo which I think is actually true after thinking about it.
REFLECTIONS
Week 10:
Finding ideas for the sketches were pretty easy and direct. I did not have much problem regarding this process.
Week 11:
Trying to incorporate the photograph into my work throughout painting was a bit of a challenge since I'm not used to paint landscapes or anything related to nature. I was a bit lost at first as I already knew that I would not be able to replicate exactly the same colour tone or details like in my photograph for the background of my work. So, I tried to go through an abstract way but still with a bit of realism to it. Painting the dove and choosing my colour palette was pretty easy and direct as compared to my previous project 1 where I struggled more. I would say that doing this exercise was a bit of a change since I don't usually go for landscapes in my works. It was quite fun to do and I got the opportunity to reminisce about the old times.
