EXERCISES

Week 2:
Project 1 Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing
We are to record ourselves using our phone in order to dub a muted video from the movie 'Soul'. We also need to add the sound effects in the background which we can find online.

I started by recording myself using my phone by reading the script that was provided to us. After that, I proceeded to edit my voice using Adobe Premiere Pro. Then, I edited the video and also tried to play with the audios level as I thought that by lowering the sound it would make it look more realistic.

Draft 1
For my first draft, I focused mostly on the audio dubbing. I wanted to try and focus on getting the right timing by synchronizing the voices with the mouth movements but also have the right tonality for the speech.

Doing the voiceover was much easier than I thought and I managed to not waste too much time on having to rerecord the audios over and over again as I tried to observe the timing for the mouth movement before recording so that it could be in sync.

Week 3:
Draft 2
After some editing and being able to achieve something that I was satisfied with, I started adding some ambience sound and sound effects.

Week 4:
After hearing Mr. Martin's feedback for my audio dubbing, I made the necessary improvement by adding more ambient sounds and increasing the volume of the latter. Additionally, I also added a background music so as to make the video sound more dramatic.

Project 1 Exercise 2: Sound Shaping
This exercise consists of using audio clips provided to us and edit them based on scenarios given to us as well.

To proceed with this exercise, we were taught how to use Adobe Audition. Using this software was pretty easy and direct. I did not have much difficulty when I was doing this exercise.

In order to create the 4 different sound effects which were phone call, inside a closet, voice inside of a toilet/bathroom, underground cave, I respectively used the EQ sound effect, the muffled sound effects as well as the reverb sound effects.

Week 10:
Project 1 Exercise 3: Sound Design
We are required to modify three audio given to us and design them into:
1. Explosion sound.
2. Triple punches.
3. Monster or Alien voice.

I used Adobe Audition to modify my sounds. I made use of the different effects that were shown to us in previous class.

FEEDBACKS
Week 4:
General feedback: There need to be at least 3 ambient sounds for the video.

Special feedback: The dialogue is good. Add 2 more ambient sounds and increase the volume.

REFLECTIONS
Exercise 1
Week 2:
At first when I thought of doing the audio dubbing exercise, I could not stop thinking about how cringe it would be. However, after doing the recordings of the script it felt less awkward and quite natural. Changing the tones in Adobe Premiere Pro was pretty easy to do and even the audio editing was not that hard. It only felt a bit tiring because since it was my first time doing it, it took some time to synchronize the dubbing to the video. It was tedious sometimes to find the right timing for the audio and the video as sometimes the dubbing would be too slow as compared to the video's speed. Also, since I have never used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the sound, it did feel a bit hard at first to modify and make the dubbing looks like it was natural.

Week 4:
After finishing the audio dubbing exercise, I would say that it turned out better than I expected it to be. I was happy that my audio dubbing was not as cringe as I thought it would be. This exercise was actually pretty fun and I actually started to enjoy it. The one thing that felt tedious was when the audio tracks started to become a lot and I was struggling sometimes to find the audio that I needed to edit since there was a lot. It was interesting to do this exercise since I never dubbed anything in my whole life. It all felt new and exciting to learn and do the same as how normally animation studios would tackle those tasks. I definitely had a blast doing this task!

Exercise 2 // Sound Shaping & Sound Design
Week 5 -10:
Learning how to modify sounds and create different audio effects was quite interesting. It was pretty simple to understand the concept and use the different tools. Additionally, I tried to learn some more by looking online for some tips so that I could use them to edit my audio sound. Even though the tools were simple sometimes it was hard to figure out what to use for which one. This exercise was a pretty fun experience.
