Advanced Typography - Task 2A : Key Artwork

Week 6:
This new task consists of designing a key artwork where the latter is both a lettering but also an artwork. It can both be used to identify someone and used as a collateral (e.g Pin/T-shirt).

Note:
1. We can use our own initials, our first name or our pet's name.
2. Focus on using black and white only for now.
3. Use only very limited graphical elements.
4. Can use any typeface for this task but we also need to modify it so that the outcome is distinct.
5. Artboard can be of any size.
6. Need to use Adobe Illustrator.
7. Do a lot of explorations and compositions.

Visual Research
As usual before sketching out my ideas I hopped onto Pinterest to find some inspiration.

Additionally, since the key artwork is supposed to represent ourselves and our identity I also made a mind map as I thought that this would be able to help me in the process of my task.

Sketches
I wanted to use my initials E & H since I thought that normally we don't usually see the letters E and H together. My sketches were inspired by art style but also my personality. In my everyday life, I tend to have an appreciation towards things whether it be objects, art or anything that look refined, detailed but also has some simplicity to it. Additionally, as for my personal art style I tend to also go for things that requires a lot of patience or can be tedious due to the amount of details. So, I tried to reflect what I like into those sketches.

After some reflections, I also thought of the fact that our lecturer told us that when we are to look at our work it should also reflect our origin that is where we came from and so on. Based on this, I tried to inspire myself from the Chinese Symbols as I thought that they looked intriguing, interesting and also would be a good way to represent my origins.

Based from my sketches, I wanted to develop the option 'F' as I thought it looked original. Honestly, I just wanted to try a lot of variations since I was not sure myself of what was expected from us at the end. I tried to make the letterings look like a pattern just like what we can see in the Chinese Symbols.

Week 7:
After receiving our weekly feedback, I realised that I might have taken the 'artwork' concept a bit too far and did not take into consideration the readability and legibility of my key artwork. Hence, back to my artboard and the illustration process!

After getting our usual feedbacks, I decided to review my options that were good to go but needed a bit of improvement. So, after some more refinement I came up with this final idea.

Final Task 2A - Key Artwork

My Key Artwork is primarily based on both my personality and my artistic flair. I wanted to do something clean, straightforward, and attractive while also being refined and uncomplicated.

Advanced Typography - Task 2B: Collateral
For the next task of this assignment, we are to create collaterals that is we need to design collateral materials based on the concept of our key artwork such as t-shirt, label pins and so on. After that we need to come up with an animated version of our key artwork. Then, after doing all of this we need to create an Instagram account and do minimum at least 9 posts.

Task 2B: Collateral (Part 1 - Animated Key Artwork)
So as to tackle this task, I hopped onto Adobe Illustrator and proceeded to design the different panels that were going to be into the animated version of my key artwork. In total I made 31 artboards as I wanted my animation to look smooth and clean. However, at the end I only ended up using 26 artboard since it was a bit too slow at first when I used 31 artboards.

I made the decision to rethink my original concept and create a new one in order to improve my key artwork animation. I created a total of 24 new frames, and the animation was based on the logo I previously created as my key artwork for my Instagram account's collaterals. I had the idea to experiment with a circle's form, and I also wanted to incorporate the motion of a full moon cycle because I like astronomy.

Task 2B: Collateral (Part 2 - Collateral)
After proceeding with the part 1 of this task, I moved on to the collateral part. In this final part of task 2B we are to put and use our key artwork as a collateral that is either a t-shirt, pins and so on.

Visual Research
Before tackling this task, I surfed the web so as to have some insight and examples on how I could proceed with this asssignment.

My initial thought was to select a colour scheme for both my Instagram feed and my logo. I wanted to employ subtle, yet starkly contrasting, colours. I wanted something that would be both simple and not too over the top.

Figure 2.7 Colour Scheme, 20th October 2022

After choosing the colours that I would use, I made different colour variations of my logo.

I later created a profile picture for my Instagram account as well. I wanted to do something that would be visually appealing but also not too difficult to understand.

I then started working on my collaterals. My initial thought, starting from the left, was to create an envelope's cover. Another thought was to use the logo I created for my key art work as a T-shirt and bookmark design.

Finally, after finishing the collaterals  I started designing my Instagram feed. Like I said before, I like things that are detailed but also simple. Based on this concept, I created a feed which would reflect my personality.

My Instagram account displays mostly my passion for traditional art.

Final Task 2B: Collateral (Part 2 - Flat Lay &Instagram Account) (Before feedback)

Figure 3.2 Flat Lay, 30th October 2022
After hearing the feedbacks from my lecturer, I made the necessary changes. For my collaterals, I updated them and decided to make bookmarks, stickers, posters and a t-shirt. I wanted my brand to represent things that I myself would like to buy or even use in my everyday life such as bookmarks since I like to read books as well.

Figure 3.3 Instagram feed, 30th October 2022

I wanted something to convey the terms modern and sophisticated for my feed. Dark red is the colour I chose since it also stands for strength and passion which I believe represents my personality on the inside.

Final Task 2B: Collateral (Part 2 - Flat Lay &Instagram Account) (After feedback)
After the usual weekly feedback, I tried to improve my collaterals as well. This time I went for hoodies, cap and tote bag and used some of the collaterals from before.

FEEDBACKS
Week 6:
Try more explorations. Use a square as a reference to evaluate the amount of white space. Use thicker strokes and make the H line shorter.

Week 7:
Option 2 lacks of readability. Option 6, if I can manage to find a way to make the letter E stand out more by increasing the visual weight then I can go with this option. Option 7 is the best as it has more balance.

Week 9:
I need to add my own picture into my feed. Don't use too much of my artworks. Change and rethink of the presentation of some of my collaterals. Modify the way I put the logo onto the T-shirt. The bookmark is a good idea.

Lecturer's feedbacks:
W11, T2: Excellent key art. Animation and collateral was underwhelming—room for improvement. Competency level: Developing.

W11, T2: Complete.

REFLECTIONS
This task seemed rather difficult at first glance. But after finishing this assignment, it was simpler than I had anticipated. The beginning was challenging since, in all honesty, I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to advocate for and define as myself in my Key Artwork. I was able to produce something I was happy with after some thorough research and further persistence. Doing collaterals, was a new thing for me. At first, it seemed a little confusing because I wasn't sure what I wanted to represent as the products of my brand. I was able to identify a more specific aim to create and promote something that meant more to me after hearing my lecturer's remarks. I found out that in order to do something authentic, it is important to stick to our true self and also listen to our gut instinct. Additionally, creating an Instagram feed is harder than it looks like. Making something presentable and aesthetically pleasing while both promoting our products and conveying our message involves careful consideration from start to finish.

Summary of article:
Since I've never really paid attention to how designer usually create their Instagram feed, I decided to surf the web in order to gain some insight and tips. This article summarised some useful tips on how to proceed on the creation of your Instagram feed. What I retained the most is the fact that it is important to have consistency with the design pattern that we are trying to create.
