INSTRUCTIONS

Week 7:
Visual Design
In summary, our new task consists of creating our own design for our dissertation. After creating some designs or sketches we are to use InDesign to align the illustrations, text etc.. to make it look presentable for publication by using FLIPHTML5.

Things to look out for during this exercise:
  • Body Text & Page count - 8-12
  • Headers - 30 and above
  • Primary header - 16 - 24
  • Sub headers - 12 bold
  • Line length - 55-65 / 50-60 characters
  • Text Leading- 2, 2.5, 3 points larger than font size
  • Ragging - left alignment
  • Rivers - Left justification
  • Cross Alignment
  • No widows / Orphans
  • Paragraph spacing same as leading
  • During tracking maximum 3 and minimum 3
  • Turn off hyphenation
InDesign:
- Press alt + left/right arrow to do kerning or tracking.
- Go to edit to reduce the units & increments for kerning and tracking.
- Put paragraph spacing as pt.

Moodboard

Week 10:
After considering the feedbacks provided to me, I looked for more interesting fonts that I could use for my cover, headers and page numbers. I looked for something more intricate and related to my themes. For the body text, I sticked with something clear and easy for the viewers to read.

Week 12:
These are the fonts that I  used to create my e-book:
- Header, Sub-headers & Title: Inside Out
- Body: ITC New Baskerville Std
- Page numbers: Hiro Misake

My e-book's concept was based on creating something from using simple and minimalistic shapes. The pastel shades were chosen because the colour palette was influenced by the film "Spirited Away." All of the design elements were designed by me through Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. I also added the Taylor's University logo at the back.

FEEDBACKS
Week 9:
General Feedback:
We can decide whether we want the page number to appear everywhere or only on the odd numbered pages.

Special Feedback:
- For the content wise, image 2 matches more with the style I’m going for.
- Try to find a more unique and interesting font for the cover page. Something related to animation.

Week 10:
Special Feedback:
- The ‘of’ in my title can be italic or put it in a colour box.
- Change the word efficiency to effectiveness
- After the cover page, I need a copyright page.

Week 11:
Special Feedback:
- Add the author and other necessary information on a different page
- Try to use more organic shapes and less geometrical one as it can look a bit too harsh
- Try to find another Japanese font with small letters
- Try to make the columns less bigger and give more space

Week 12:
Special Feedback:
- Add the word copyright in front of the Taylor's Press
- Add some more sentences in the introduction for the research methodology to match with the diagram that I have shown.

Week 13:
Special Feedback:
    - Remove the hyphens
      - Add 5 keywords for the abstract
        - Put summary conclusion instead of conclusion in my section 2.4
          - Change the figures and tables according to the sections
            - Avoid to start your paragraph with ‘for’
              - Add more information for my visual analysis
                - Add a table to put the timestamps and try to be more descriptive
                  - Add a sentence to mention that my interviewees gave consent
                    - Put the questions in a table
                      - Be more clear in my section 4.0
                        - Lastly, add proof of my interviewees response

                        REFLECTIONS
                        Week 8:
I found this assignment more interesting than the first one. However, I believe this one might be more time consuming since I have to create from scratch my designs, layouts etc.. for the e-book. For now, I’m focusing on finding ideas of how I want to arrange my content with other illustrations and all.

                        Week 9:
It was a challenge to design the cover of my dissertation. It took me multiple trials to find the right one and get a decent composition. Doing the layouts for the other pages were also quite hard to do since I lacked inspiration a lot.

                        Week 10:
Trying to design and find the right layouts for such a big amount of words was hard. Sometimes the alignment of my paragraphs felt really odd or didn’t look nice. It was also hard to include the illustrations on the page in such a way that it wouldn’t overshadow the most important of my content. Trying to find the right balance was the most tedious work among all.

                        Week 11:
The deadline for the assignment was drawing near, so I had to work quickly and under pressure to finish it. It took a lot of effort to finish all of these pages. The biggest challenge I had was coming up with something that was fascinating while yet being unified and consistent. I wanted to design each section differently while keeping the overall coherence, to give the impression that each section was drawn from the same book.

                        Week 12:
Doing this e-book was something new to me since I never had to do this before. Getting ideas for every page was quite a headache since I wanted it to remain consistent but at the same time wanted to implement something different. Making sure everything was well aligned and doing the kerning and tracking of every paragraph was also tedious to do. Overall, I believe I learned a lot from this task and will try to keep in mind what I have learned from it in the future.

                        Week 13:
It was quite exhausting to rewrite some sections of my dissertation because I also had to edit those sections in my e-book. Being required to complete an article publication that couldn't simply be a copy and paste assignment from our dissertation added to the stress. Overall, making the changes wasn't difficult; they just took a lot of time.
