Motion Graphics and Compositing // Task 3
Lectures
Week 9:
We shortly talked about the process of doing a storyboard and then developing it into an animatic.
Instructions
Week 10:
Channel Identity
We are to continue our motion graphics task based on the channel that we chose previously for our channel bumper. We are to use information for any proposed channel (existing or fictional), create a mood board that reflects our concept/idea, develop a storyboard, create animatics, and explore appropriate audios to uplift the motion tempo.
The final output will include a 15 – 30 sec video (*.mp4 or .MOV, h2.64, 16:9 - 1920 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz uploaded to YouTube channel).
Before starting any sketches, I visited the Winsor and Newton website to learn more about their brand. I read short articles about their history, brand values, and product offerings. I also watched some of their product showcase videos for inspiration, thinking about incorporating similar elements into my new animation.
Here are some videos that I thought might be useful to implement, whether for their texture, graphic elements, or transitions.

Storyboard (Before feedbacks)
After diving into the research part for the brand that I've chosen, I started to sketch out the ideas that I had and created a storyboard for it.
Here's the storyboard for my channel identity.

Storyboard (After feedbacks)
After receiving feedback from my lecturer, I made adjustments by removing certain elements I had initially planned and incorporated more features from the existing website.

Week 12:
Process
Based on the feedbacks that I've gotten from my lecturer, I scrapped some parts from my storyboard and added more materials which were from the website itself. I took some videos from the website itself and also used some PNG that I found on the websites below.

After sourcing the materials that I needed for the video, I started to animate it in After Effects. For my initial transition, I aimed to create a watercolor/ink spill effect. I followed a tutorial on YouTube, downloaded a video featuring an ink splash, and applied a mask using a watercolor texture in PNG format. I also made the required frame adjustments for the desired outcome.

After that, I started drawing an eye using Photoshop. I like using Photoshop because it's easier for me, and I wanted a brush stroke look instead of something too neat. Moreover, I included an espresso eye chart text effect, since I thought it'd resemble those eye tests at an optician's office.

After that, I created another animated text with a paint drip effect. I did this by adding a smear effect to certain letters and adjusting their positions and keyframes.

Later on, I aimed to make another paint drip effect for the transition. I achieved this by drawing lines with the pen tool and adding a rectangular shape. Then, I played with keyframes, applying turbulent displace and stroke effects. After adjusting the keyframes, I added layer styles such as satin, drop shadow, inner shadow, and bevel and emboss for extra flair.

Next, I downloaded and edited several videos, following the storyboard concept of canvas dropping to convey the message 'build your imagination.' I experimented with sizes, rotations, and various transitions for how the 'canvas' enters the screen. I opted for a faster pace to keep it engaging and avoid it being too slow and dull.

For the last bit of my animation, I tried to do some kinetic typography and played around with the meaning of the words to create a kinetic motion for it.

Feedbacks
Week 10:
- Try to use a more simple font like Helvetica
- Try to use elements that are already existing from the brand's website. Use their content and make it more interesting so that I can simplify my work.
- Add a mood board based on the materials of the website and texture and so on.
- For the portfolio, also add the screenshots of my work including the keyframes and so on.
- Include the website link at the end.
Reflections
Week 10 - 12:
Completing this task felt a bit tedious for me, as this type of exercise doesn't align with my usual style. I faced considerable challenges in understanding the requirements. After days of struggling, I managed to produce something that is just okay in my opinion. While I'm not entirely satisfied, at this point, it is what it is. The assignment taught me numerous new effects that I can apply in future projects, and I gained a better understanding of creating a channel bumper or identity. Despite not enjoying it, the experience was valuable as it significantly expanded my knowledge of After Effects.
