Task 3B - Type Design & Communication
REFLECTION
Experience:
When I first heard about this course, I was a bit reluctant about it. I remember that in Highschool, I hated doing anything related to logos or lettering. Eventually, I had this fear that the same thing would happen again. The start of my semester was a bit rough mostly during the process of doing the sketches for the Type Expression. I remember feeling so stressed about it. However, after a few more weeks and getting used to Adobe Illustrator, I would say that I got used to the new routine and even got to enjoy some exercises such as Task 1 & 2 mostly when doing the layouts. I made sure to note down what we learned during the lectures specifically when we had to use Adobe InDesign which at first felt a bit overwhelming. After this semester, I felt like I learned so much things in such a short amount of time even though it lasted 14 weeks.
Observation:
There are so many things that I learned in typography. Honestly, I was surprised to see how much work we have to put into a design like a layout or creating our own typeface. At first, it looks so simple and it would make you think that this is an easy job but actually not at all. I realised that when it comes to typography, it comes down to the smallest details. This one small detail that could change a lot of thing about the appearance of your work. In typography, you also have to develop your critical thinking. I don't think that I struggled with this a lot since back in Highschool, I took Art & Design for my A-levels which required a lot of critical thinking. Also, I'm a perfectionist by nature which I think also helped me when it came to judging my own work. This subject is so complex but at the same time so beautiful. Beautiful, because I think that it takes a lot for someone to create something using only letters and being able to communicate so much throughout words without the need to utter a single word.
Findings:
I found out that sometimes in typography simplicity is key. I think that beginners (for me at least) often tend to go and do something out of the ordinary because they want to impress others. However, I think that doing the opposite actually might be more impactful. It would be more worth it to have something clear, simple and direct to the point rather than something complex and difficult to understand. Ironically, this is also something that I always need to remind myself of when doing creating an artwork. Finding the right balance between simplicity and keeping the artwork interesting to look at was indeed a challenge for me. I did have my ups and downs during this course mostly when I felt like I lacked inspiration for the last task. Yet, it was still memorable and I do not have any regrets about how I tackled my tasks. I felt like I grew up a lot not only with my technical skills but also my perspective on typography. Lastly, I would like to say that I'm still not a big fan of typography but I do hate it less and it did grow a bit on me.
